Gold and commodity ETFs

In Europe, many gold and commodity products are not funds. They are ETCs, debt securities. How they are backed matters more than the name.

Education, not advice. Nothing here recommends buying or selling any fund. Past returns are not used to rank anything. Funds can lose value, and some products carry the credit risk of their issuer.

Examples chosen by size and common use, not a recommendation. The list is not complete and other funds on the same index exist. Annual cost is the figure each issuer publishes (ongoing charge or total expense ratio). Fund size depends on whether the issuer reports the whole fund or one share class; the basis is shown where stated. Past performance is not shown and not used.

What it holds

Physical gold products hold gold bars in a vault and track the gold price. Futures-based commodity products hold futures contracts, not the commodity. They roll contracts forward, which can add or remove return, and which can make them differ from the spot price over time.

What to compare

  • Legal form. ETC or ETN is debt of an issuer. A fund is a segregated pool of assets.
  • Backing. Physical metal, or futures contracts, or a promise by the issuer.
  • Custody. Who holds the metal, whether bars are allocated to the product, and how often they are audited.
  • Annual cost (TER). For physical metal it includes storage.
  • Roll cost. For futures-based products, the cost or gain of rolling contracts.
  • Currency. Gold is priced in dollars. A euro product has a currency effect unless hedged.
  • Fund size. Small products can close.

Main risks

Gold and commodity prices can fall sharply and pay no income. A futures-based product can lose money from rolling even when the price is flat. An ETC carries issuer risk, partly reduced if the metal is held for the product. Check the prospectus.

How the tables are built. Every figure was read on 13 October 2026 from the issuer's own page or factsheet, and each fund links to its source. A figure we could not verify is shown as "not verified", never estimated.

First edition: products from iShares, Invesco, WisdomTree, SPDR and Xtrackers. Not a recommendation of any of them.

Questions people ask

Is a gold ETC the same as a gold ETF?

Not legally. An ETC is a debt security backed by metal. A fund holds assets in a segregated pool.

Does a gold product hold real gold?

Physical products do. Futures-based ones do not. Read the backing section of the document.

Why can a commodity ETF differ from the price?

Futures-based products pay or earn roll costs, so they can drift from the spot price.
