  • 2025-05-11 Coinbase received an extortion email; threat actor had bribed overseas support contractors/employees to extract customer data (names, contact data, masked SSN/bank numbers, ID images, balance snapshots). Coinbase says no passwords or private keys were compromised. Outcome: Coinbase refused the demand; estimated USD 180-400 million cost; stated it will voluntarily reimburse eligible retail customers who sent funds to the attacker (social-engineering losses). source
