Stock Valuation Exercise: the Five Largest Companies

A worked example in four moves: market value, its parts, fundamentals, and multiples against competitors. Five companies, the same method, every figure sourced.

Verified figures, not advice. Every number on this page comes from the company's own filings or from exchange prices, and the source is linked. Every calculation is shown, so you can repeat it. What we do not do is tell you what a share should be worth or whether to buy it: that depends on your goals and on forecasts, and no multiple can settle it. This is a snapshot: prices of 12 Oct 2026, company results up to mid 2026. Found a mistake? Tell us and we correct it.

The five are the largest listed companies by market value in October 2026 according to public rankings. Multiples are computed from filings; "vs median" compares the company with the median of its chosen competitors. Competitor lists are our choice and shown on each page.

The method

  1. Take the price (the nominal share value) and the number of shares. Multiply: that is the market capitalisation.
  2. Split it. Add debt, subtract cash and short-term investments, add minority interests. The result is enterprise value, the price of the whole business.
  3. Read the fundamentals. Revenue, operating income, EBITDA, net income and free cash flow over the last twelve months.
  4. Make multiples. Divide price or EV by those results: P/E, EV/sales, EV/EBITDA, EV/operating income, P/FCF.
  5. Compare. Do the same for the largest competitors and set the company beside their average and median.

How to read these numbers

  • A multiple above or below competitors says nothing alone. Growth, margins and risk differ.
  • Reported profits include one-time gains. Alphabet and Amazon profits are inflated by gains on stakes in other companies, so their P/E looks low for a reason that will not repeat.
  • No competitor group is a perfect match. We show the mean and the median because one extreme competitor can distort the mean.
  • This uses past results. Prices move every day.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between market cap and enterprise value?

Market cap is the price of the shares. Enterprise value adds the debt and removes the cash, so it is the price of the whole business.

Which multiple is best?

None alone. P/E is simple but distorted by one-offs. EV/EBITDA ignores differences in debt. EV/sales works for companies with little profit. Use several together.

Can I use this to decide what to buy?

No. It teaches how to read a valuation. It is not a recommendation about any company.
