For shares, ETFs and index products: size the trade from the risk you accept and where your stop sits.
Risk warning. Leveraged products such as forex and CFDs lose money quickly and most retail accounts lose. These calculators do arithmetic on the numbers you type. They are education, not advice, and not a recommendation to trade anything.
The method
Units = (account × risk % − commissions) ÷ distance between entry and stop. The result is rounded down to a whole unit. Commission is counted on both sides.
units = (account × risk% − 2 × commission) ÷ |entry − stop|
Gaps
Shares and indices can open beyond a stop after a close. The loss can be larger than planned, so size for a worse exit than the one you expect.
For crypto futures and perpetuals, use the crypto position size calculator.
Questions people ask
Does leverage change how many units I should buy?
No. The size comes from risk and stop distance. Leverage only changes the margin you must post.
What is reward to risk?
The distance to the target divided by the distance to the stop. The calculator also shows the win rate needed to break even at that ratio.
Can I use it for index CFDs?
Yes, if the price is in your account currency and one unit moves one point in value. Check your broker's contract size.
