See how much margin a position locks up, and how small a move it takes to use all your equity.
Risk warning. Leveraged products such as forex and CFDs lose money quickly and most retail accounts lose. These calculators do arithmetic on the numbers you type. They are education, not advice, and not a recommendation to trade anything.
The formula
margin = units × price ÷ leverage
Margin is a deposit held against the position, not a cost. The position value is what moves your equity.
Why the wipe-out move matters
The move that uses all equity is equity ÷ position value. With a position 20 times your equity, a 5% move against you uses it all. Brokers close positions earlier, at their stop-out level.
For leveraged crypto perpetuals, with isolated margin and a liquidation price, see the crypto liquidation price calculator.
Questions people ask
What is the maximum leverage?
It depends on your regulator, the instrument and your client category. Check your broker's published limits.
Is margin the same as the amount I can lose?
No. You can lose more than the margin if the market moves against the position, up to your equity or beyond where negative balance protection does not apply.
What is a stop-out level?
The margin level at which a broker starts closing your positions. It is set by the broker.
